Shoot Advisory Services

The Greater Exmoor Shoots Association research estimates that £32.5 million was being contributed to the UK economy in 2008 by 65 shoots in the Greater Exmoor area, which is considerable fillip also to the local economy where a great deal of the money re-circulates.

The Elms Estate Office is involved in the preparation of the terms for shooting agreements, the application for and the selection of prospective sporting tenants, the preparation of budgets for shoots, the selection of staff and of employments matters, including terms and conditions and agreements for the occupation of service dwellings. We also deal with agreements for game plots, settlement of inevitable claims from time to time and public relations.

We have experience of complying with Shoot Assurance Schemes and the necessary codes, compliances and risk management associated with shoots. We have experience of the environmental and single farm payment schemes that can impinge upon shoots together with the special requirements of operating in the National Park, where we have pioneered “dispersed game cover” in these sensitive landscapes with some success.

We have had experience of many legal aspects that can lead to disputes (for example, where there are retained shooting rights or profit a prendre); we have agreed values of shooting for compulsory purchase; and we have been asked from time to time to settle rental values of individual drives or of whole shoot enterprises.
